about THE CLIENT
Pitch Music & Arts is a four-day electronic music and arts festival held in rural Victoria, Australia. By its third edition in 2019, the festival had established a strong international programme and a distinctive identity built around electronic music, contemporary art, architecture and large-scale installations.
Set near the Grampians National Park, the remote landscape adds another layer to the experience, placing highly considered stages and contemporary art installations against a dramatic rural Australian backdrop. Its collaborations with major electronic music platforms including Resident Advisor and Boiler Room helped create a highly curated environment, giving Pitch an aesthetic noticeably different from more traditional Australian bush festivals.
MY contribution
After meeting Photography Manager Duncan while shooting another Australian festival, I was invited to join Pitch’s four-person photography team for the full 2019 event. Working from a detailed and evolving brief, coverage was coordinated across the team to capture artists, crowds, stages, installations, branding and the wider festival atmosphere, including activity around the Resident Advisor and Boiler Room stages.
The structured approach pushed me to adapt my usual documentary style, balancing large-scale atmosphere with details, architecture and more considered compositions. With multiple areas running simultaneously, the role required careful planning, communication and constant adjustment throughout the four days. I ultimately delivered approximately 200–300 edited photographs for Pitch’s social media and wider marketing use.
