about THE CLIENT
Rainbow Serpent Festival was one of Australia’s most established electronic music, arts and lifestyle festivals, bringing around 15,000 people to the Victorian countryside for four days of music, creativity and community. Held near Lexton, Victoria, the festival grew from its late-1990s beginnings into an internationally recognised event attracting artists and visitors from around the world.
More than a conventional music festival, Rainbow Serpent combined electronic music, immersive art, performance, workshops, markets, wellbeing spaces and communal camping across a sprawling rural site. Its bush setting, colourful self-expression and strong sense of participation helped create one of Australia’s most distinctive festival cultures.
MY contribution
While travelling through Australia in 2019, Rainbow Serpent was one of the events I was most determined to experience. After applying through a creative competition, I was selected to join the festival’s official photography team, working across the full four-day event.
Given considerable creative freedom, I documented the complete atmosphere of the festival, from artists, stages and crowds to performers, portraits, installations, workshops, camping and spontaneous moments throughout the site. Extreme heat, dust and a continuous programme meant constantly adapting where and when I worked.
I ultimately delivered approximately 300 edited photographs within a week, providing a broad collection of imagery for the festival’s social media and wider marketing use.
